Rescue excavations at the archaeological site of Sejja, Siliana – South delegation, Siliana Governorate: February-March 2021
Following acts of demolition using a Bulldozer, the services of the National Heritage Institute in the governorate of Siliana intervened (and still are) to carry out a rescue excavation on the archaeological site of ” Sejja “in Siliana Sud, under the direction of Mr. Chokri Touihri, Researcher at the National Heritage Institute, who heads a multidisciplinary team: Mr. Mounir Torchani (Heritage Conservator) and Mahbouba Chennaoui (technician) with the participation of the topographic survey team Qais Trabelsi, Yassine Al-Rabie and the Chief – works of the Archaeological Site of Jamma, Mr. Ridha Landoulsi, Mr. Lotfi Kahlon (driver), as well as a group of postgraduate students in archeology. Rescue excavations have focused on documenting the remains of a farmhouse and wine press dating from late Antiquity (the fifth and sixth centuries AD).
The team also studied and inventoried the most important landmarks of the expanding site and testifying to the continuity of the humanitarian presence in the region, most of which were victims of the acts of demolition. The research team thanks the regional and local authorities, in particular Mr. Governor of Siliana, the commissioner of the Siliana – south delegation, the Chief of the national guard of Siliana south, and the inhabitants of the region for their cooperation.
